Message from the department head

Ahlan Wassaalahn: Welcome to our small but busy department! When you can’t breathe, you need immediate attention. We’ve put together a highly skilled team of respiratory therapists here to ensure that you get the urgent care you may need. Our staff of 11 therapists boasts a collective accumulation of 85 years of experience in the field! We operate on a 24/7 basis, so there is always a knowledgeable therapist available when you need one. From simple, post-operative expansion exercises to asthma-relieving medication treatments, to complex life support with continuous mechanical ventilation, our aim is to restore your health and return you to your home as soon as possible. We are in the process of upgrading our entire ventilator fleet, so that our patients may benefit from state-of-the-art therapeutic technologies, including conventional, high frequency and new non-invasive ventilation strategies. We also offer pulmonary lung surfactant replacement for low birth weight premature babies, to support those patients who arrive “a little too early”. We have a generous array of diagnostic devices and procedures, which allow us to provide instantaneous information to the physicians, so that they can institute the best treatment for your illness. Despite the “high tech” nature of our field, we never forget the human component of our practice, and you will be treated with compassion and dignity throughout your stay here. It gives me great pleasure to be able to serve the city of Riyadh in a way that enhances the lives of its inhabitants.

Other Information

Respiratory Therapy, or Respiratory Care, is a paramedical specialty providing a wide variety of technical, diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients of all ages with breathing difficulties.

It is a relatively “young” specialty, having evolved in the late 1950’s in North America as a means of preventing respiratory complications following surgical procedures.

The syllabus focuses on the sciences of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biology, physics, pharmacology, sociology, psychology, and of course, respiratory therapy. All students must rotate through internships at affiliated healthcare facilities to gain their clinical skills. Over the past two decades there has been an increasing integration of computer skills into the curricula, as technological advances have resulted in improvements in patient care.

The respiratory care practitioner (RCP) or respiratory therapist (RT) is often among the first staff to see a patient who presents to the Emergency department with breathing difficulties; drawing an arterial blood sample to determine the effectiveness of the lungs at providing oxygen and exhausting carbon dioxide.

The RCP must be able to perform a rapid assessment and treatment to patients with severe respiratory distress, such as those with asthma, in order to avoid serious life-threatening consequences.

The RCP is a crucial member of the resuscitation team, providing airway control and artificial ventilation for victims of traumatic injuries and/or heart attacks.

The RCP is also often on hand to care for tiny, premature babies who arrive unexpectedly early, and whose lungs have not yet matured enough to support them outside the womb. The RCP is expert at providing complex, technical ventilatory support for these less-than-one-kilo patients.

In short, the RCP, with his/her specialized training, knowledge and skills, may very well become your “best friend” when you require urgent attention to relieve breathing difficulties.
